Visiting a tailor means forming a relationship. You are choosing a professional to help you look your best. No doubt, before meeting your tailor for the first time you’ll have your own expectations of what the end product will look like and how it will fit. Which brings us to tip number 1.
Be clear what you want but open-minded
You’ll know in your own mind what it is you want and it’s important you’re able to clearly articulate that to your tailor. But at the same time, it’s important to remember that he’s the expert and to listen to his advice and guidance. It’s his job to help you look great and anything he says is designed to achieve that aim. That said, the final decision lies with you. Which brings us to tip number 2.
Do your research
If you haven’t done some basic research, how can you expect to have formed an opinion about what you want? Again, your tailor is there to advise and to answer questions but to get most out of the conversation you’ll want to have done some background reading and formed some ideas of styles and fits that you like. That way the time you spend with your tailor can be as productive as possible rather than going over real basic stuff. So, we move on to tip number 3.
Understanding different suiting fabrics
One of the most important decisions you’ll make is your choice of fabric. With so many to choose from, you won’t be expected to know every detail of every fabric, but knowing how and where you plan to wear the suit will give you an idea of whether you want a heavier or lighter fabric and maybe get an idea of the color or shade. Once again, these are things you can discuss with your tailor before making a final decision but it’s recommended that you have some idea of the fabrics on offer prior to your appointment so that you can make the best use of your tailor’s in-depth knowledge on the subject. And finally:
Wear your usual business attire
Turning up to your appointment in jeans or chinos makes it difficult for your tailor to see your silhouette. Yes, he has an expert eye for these things, but you’re not there to put him to the test. You’re there to make his life as easy as possible so that he can help you step out in style.
