Suiting 101: Be Bold - How to wear a Bold suit

If you’ve been following our blog for a while, you probably have the suit basics well under control by now. A glance into your closet will take you through the seasons; you’ll find a charcoal, navy and a khaki suit at the very least. Being well-prepared for the year is good – no, it’s perfect – but why not take it to the next level?

The Fall and Winter season call for the more heavy and textured fabrics. Spring and Summer however call for a bit of a bolder you. Yes, we’re talking about adding a bit of serious colour to your look. A bold suit added to your usual, daily wear, will demonstrate that you are confident, and who likes confidence? That’s right. Your boss, and most of all of course – the Ladies. With a custom-tailored suit in bold colours you can be sure to have all eyes on you, as you walk down the street. Some eyes will glance at you filled with impression, others with pure envy. Should that disturb you? Oh no, you, my fine gentleman deserve the looks, as you have done everything right – with a bold suit that is.

The flowers are slowly starting to bloom and showing their best looks – so should you! Let us help your wardrobe abide with some helpful suggestions in going bold this Spring/Summer.

Confidence is key

When it comes to wearing bolder colours, you’re going to get noticed, as we already mentioned. It is very much up to you to own that look; to own wearing a lot of single-coloured outfits – something that you may, or may not be accustomed to. A tip from us would definitely be, that you wear your new bold suit as if you’ve been wearing it for years already. In fact, act like you were born with it on – as the stylish baby that has done everything right from day one. The rest of the world might be wondering why you’d don such a flamboyant suit, however, instead wonder why they aren’t. Leave the rest to the history books.

Wearing muted and richer colours are a safer and more elegant bet for a suit. You’ll want to avoid donning any colours that makes you look like you could glow in the dark. Instead, choose colours like Cobalt, Burgundy, or a subtle green when it comes to coloured custom-tailoring.
Your dress shirts should be in white and black shades, so the attention goes on one thing, and one thing only – the suit.

Depending on whether you’re looking to dress it up or down, use a dress shirt or v-neck t shirt respectively.

Accessorise with dark shades and neutrals

Now what? You’re already wearing a breathtaking suit, but what is next on the agenda you may ask yourself? Look into your accessories, see what best fits to your new look, but don’t choose any accessories that distract from that handsome new look of yours. You’ll want your ties, shoes, lapels, etc. to complement the outfit, rather than draw all attention. Think in terms of brown, tan, beige, and black. This isn’t to say that other colours are doable. If you want to add more colour, it is definitely possible, but it requires a more in-depth understanding of color combination.

Keep the occasion in mind

When choosing accessories, like in life, there is a time and place for everything. Of course it depends on your dress code, but your workplace might not deem it appropriate to wear non-traditional colours (boring, we know). Bold suits are very much about self-expression, and at work, you’re representing someone else. That’s just how it is. There’s no shame in that.
When being invited to celebrations, like weddings, mind what the hosts expect you to wear – don’t go crazy. Even if it is okay to wear a bold color, keep in mind the focus should likely be on someone else (like the bride and groom).

Fit is king

We’re sure you know this already, but it always helps to get down to the basics. Unless you’re buying bespoke, most suits will need bespoke tailoring. Learn how to talk to your tailor, and make sure your fit is perfect. That goes especially for online orders.

Because they’re not traditional, the general public will see it as a bit of risk. However, bold suits are the next step into defining your personal style, and a little risk can go a long way. Step out of that comfort zone. You’ll be better for it. Pick a color, find the suit, tailor it, and above all, have fun with it. Stay classy, gentlemen.
